1. Describe yourself and your work.

I’m a nature-fascinated human male who is a huge fan of the ocean and its inhabitants. I’m interested in form, process, and how shape and design replicate themselves throughout the natural world, whether it’s ancient and solid or exists for just a fleeting moment in time. I also like words, humor, skateboarding, and experiences.

I’d describe my work as fun, colorful, and subtly irreverent. I work in many ways and mediums and just enjoy the act of creating whether it’s type, illustration, hand-made 3D pieces, or animation.

2. How did you get started?

I’ve always drawn and made things but went on a somewhat non-traditional route to end up doing this as my job. Fifteen years ago I was working on a building site and had a run-in with a circular saw. After recovering from that, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in illustration/art, as it was the thing I daydreamed about while I endured a succession of soul-destroying employment scenarios.... Well, that, and it seemed like a far less dangerous and vastly more rewarding occupation. Fortunately, I was correct.

3. What piece of work best represents you and why?

That’s a tricky question to answer as I enjoy lots of different approaches to creating work. But as you’ve asked, I’d say it’s not one single piece but a solo exhibition I created that was shown at the House of Vans, London. Entitled Celestial Anomalies [select images shown above], it incorporated my love of model making and form, underwater photography, making things up, type, and color. Also it was all created in a month, so it shows a work ethic, which was strangely absent in my previous employment!

4. What are you into currently?

Looking for rocks and fossils on the coast in Southern England—urchins, sharks’ teeth, and ammonites are current faves. It’s also a great excuse to wander around on the shore and check out rock pools and other cool stuff.

5. What are three things you’ve learned that young creatives should know?

Be nice to people.

Be original and find your own inspiration. I grew up in the pre-Internet days, so you had to really search for things you were interested in. 

Keep an open mind and understand that your opinion may well be wrong! Although saying that, always believe in what you do and how you do it.
