Tom Bancroft
Tom Bancroft is the creator of the online drawing event #MerMay, began in 2016. He has more than 30 years of experience in the animation industry, many spent in Walt Disney Feature animation, where he was an animator for 12 years, working on films such as Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tarzan and Brother Bear. He is the creator of Mushu, the dragon from the film Mulan. After Disney, he worked with Big Idea Productions as a supervising director and co-creator for a Veggietales DVD series. His popular character design instruction books, Creating Characters with Personality and Character Mentor, have become the most recognized books on designing characters and are required textbooks at many art schools around the world. Tom is half of the number-one animation podcast The Bancroft Brothers Animation Podcast, with his twin brother, Tony, as well as the producer of the in-production 2D animation documentary feature film, Pencil Test. Additionally, Bancroft is an artist in residence of the new animation undergraduate program at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he lives with his family. About his creation for this week’s Coloring Book chapter, he says, “I enjoy creating worlds that have a piece of what we know, but shown in a new way or environment. The underwater world of mermaids lets me do that. I wanted to capture that ‘underwater slumber party’ moment where teen girls are enjoying dressing up and having casual fun but being spied on by the mer-boys. I created this drawing ‘tradigitally’ on my Wacom 32" Pro Cintiq using Adobe Photoshop CC. I used the Kyle Webster brushes for the pencils and inks. Colors were created by Jesse Heagy in Photoshop, also.”
