“I think I first got my tablet at age 13,” says Perci Chen. “Then I shifted from traditional mediums to digital. Technology makes things so much easier; you don't have to unpack all of your paints and wash all your brushes. Sometimes it almost feels like cheating.”

 

Tech has streamlined his creative process, but the Hamburg-based illustrator spends a ton of time figuring out how to make the most of the tools at his fingertips. HIs latest obsession? Mastering the multi-faceted Eyedropper in Adobe Fresco

Rather than simply selecting a single color, he’s able to take complex swatches from his artworks, then apply those to Fresco’s wide range of pixel and watercolor brushes.

Once you get going — keep going. “It’s good to experiment,” Chen says. “People often think an artist has talent, but often it’s mostly hard work. Keep at it with diligence and you can achieve what you’re after, no problem.”
