Simple stylization is a creative signature of Natalya Shilo. The Belarusian illustrator and graphic designer — now based in Warsaw, Poland — has a unique knack for abstracting and combining basic shapes into concise patterns, with a “slightly muted color palette that looks rich together.”

She’s created a custom set of mix-and-match brushes, with just enough “light and airy” noise to evoke a handmade feel. Give them a go, and check out her tips and tricks to spark your own digital explorations.

Natalya’s tips:

Create patterns.

Go simple and stylish with just one brush and a variety of colors. Try changing the brush rotation to make the result even more interesting; go to Windows > Brush Settings to set the brush angle.

Compose unique compositions.

The noise texture makes the brushes a bit transparent. Try this experiment to add some dynamism to your work: Go to Windows > Brush Settings > Spacing and make adjustments. Draw something without lifting your hand.

You can also make the brush multi-colored. Go to Windows > Brush Settings > Color Dynamics and change the Hue Jitter to 100% —  the maximum amount of randomness. Photoshop will select a new brush color every time you click.

Decorate photos.

For the best effect, select a photo with a uniform background, or a black and white photo. To hide some elements of the brush behind the subject, go to Layers > Create a new layer > Add vector mask.

Have fun!
