Try some of these techniques.

Prepare an object.

To get a pattern ready to apply special effects, select the pattern, then click the fx button from the Properties panel.

Try new effects.

Experiment with different distortions from the Warp menu. Customize the look further by adjusting the settings for each effect.

Distort a pattern.

To replicate the look that Lewis used, choose Fisheye and adjust the Bend.

Shape it up.

Customize your pattern with a clipping mask. To do this, drag the shape over the pattern, drag to select the pattern and shape, then right-click and choose Make Clipping Mask.
