The United Nations recently announced the Ocean Decade, a pivotal time for science and sustainability efforts for a healthy ocean.

Together, Adobe and The Ocean Agency are working with artists to inspire support for ocean conservation.

Will you be one of them?

Your work could be chosen to be showcased on an international stage to influence ocean conservation action.

Let’s #CreateWaves.

The ocean is at the front line of climate change and it’s in serious trouble. Let’s be the generation to save it. Your creativity can make a difference. Get inspired by the seven ocean facts below, and pick one (or more) to make beautiful and unforgettable art.

You can use the toolkit — whether you’re creating on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop — to make it easy to create. Once you've created your artwork, post it on your Instagram account with the hashtag #CreateWaves and tag @AdobeGenCreate for a chance for your artwork to be seen. We may use your artwork in exhibitions (like this one in Paris), displays and other opportunities to influence leaders and policymakers in support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

7 Things Everyone Should Know About Our Ocean

Fact 1: Our ocean is the only one we’ve got.

We’ve only got one ocean and one chance to take care of it. What happens in this one part of the ocean impacts the entire ocean.

Fact 2: The ocean controls the climate and weather.

Our ocean protects us from the worst of climate change’s impact, but we’re making it work overtime. It’s absorbing 93 percent of climate change heat. If it gets too warm, the ocean will lose its ability to protect us.

Fact 3: We live on land, but it’s the ocean that makes Earth home.

Earth is only habitable because of the ocean. If it wasn’t hard at work stabilizing global temperatures, and producing the oxygen, water and food we need, living on Earth could be as difficult as living on Mars.

Fact 4: The ocean is home to the vast majority of life on Earth.

There are many fish, mammals and plants in the sea, and that works in our favor. The ocean is the planet's largest carbon sink hole. How? When any ocean creature defecates or dies, the carbon is safely stored at the bottom of the ocean and is kept away from our atmosphere.

Fact 5: Your health is dependent on a healthy ocean.

Beyond producing 70 percent of the oxygen we breathe, the ocean controls the weather and provides the water we drink and use to grow food. It’s also an integral part of the world economy and the livelihood of billions of people.

Fact 6: Our world is shaped by the ocean and ocean life.

Our ocean is powerful enough to carve mountains and it is powerful enough to help save the world. Ocean systems work at an epic scale that can be used to solve huge environmental issues.

Fact 7: Most of the ocean is unexplored.

After all these years, you’d think we’d have a good idea of what goes on under the sea. The truth? Over 80 percent of the ocean is still waiting to be explored and what’s waiting to be discovered could change the world.
