Before you start, save the practice file and open it in the Your Files tab in Photoshop on your iPad. The file will have the assets you need to follow along.

Note: Project files included with this tutorial are for practice purposes only.

Take a one-minute look at the technique; the steps are written out below.

Step 1: Cut it out.

With the subject layer selected, tap and hold the Lasso tool, tap Select Subject, and then tap the Mask button. If Select Subject didn’t capture everything, use the Refine Edge option and then choose Mask at the bottom.

Step 2: Blur the clouds.

With the Cloud layer now visible, select it, tap the Filters and adjustment icon, and select Gaussian blur. Adjust the blur amount to your desired level, we used level of 6.

Step 3: Send in the clouds.

Next duplicate the Clouds layer by selecting the Layer actions icon and tapping Duplicate layer. Tap and hold the duplicated Cloud layer and drag it to the top of the layers.

Step 4: Project the clouds.

Tap the Layer properties icon, change the Blend mode to Multiply, and adjust the Opacity. Tap the Clipping Mask icon to confine the new Cloud layer to the Subject layer.

Step 5: Stagger the clouds.

Tap the Transform icon and drag a corner of the clouds to offset them from the subject.

Step 6: Add some color.

Create a new layer by tapping the Add new layer icon. Select the Paint bucket tool and then tap the foreground color. Choose your preferred color, we used purple, #CC33FF. Tap the canvas to fill your layer with purple. Open Layer properties, change the Blend mode to Multiply, and lower the Opacity.

Step 7: Add some dimension.

Duplicate the top color layer and then use the Paint Bucket tool to fill the layer with black.

Step 8: Make a vignette.

Tap the Mask icon and select the Brush tool. Adjust the brush settings to your desired sizes, we used a Brush Size of 1615, Opacity 50, and Hardness 4. Then paint with black around the subject. Reduce the opacity further to blend the mask layer.

Frame it up.
