This bonus episode features graphic designer and content creator Emma Orhun speaking at the "Twisted by Design" event organized by the Ottawa Design Club this spring. Emma shares how she overcame her scientific background and got comfortable with the subjectivity of art, following her curiosity without fear of judgment; why she invented the Tamawatchi, a Tamagotchi with the functionality of an Apple Watch, as well as jean mittens; and how designing a pair of Nikes changed her career.
ABOUT THE GUEST
Emma Orhun is a creative multi-tool: a content creator, graphic designer and walking science experiment. She has gone from being a software developer and creative technologist at Shopify to full-time freelance designer working with local and international brands.
You can find her work on the bottom of Nike SB shoes and all over the internet. Combining her background in computer science, her fascination for art and growing up chronically online, Emma is driven by observing patterns, connecting the dots and sharing it all unapologetically on social media.
ABOUT THE GUEST
Ottawa Design Club is a group of creatives with a dream of uniting the design community in Ottawa and creating a safe and inclusive space for local artists to share their work and meet new people with a similar passion. Established in 2020 by founder Isabelle (Izzy) Poirier and co-founder Ariane Bédard, and run entirely by volunteers, the club primarily hosts speaker events, but also produces zines and a newsletter.
ABOUT THE HOST
Teresa Au is an executive for community engagement at Adobe, where she focuses on empowering creatives and students via workshops, panels, and podcasts.
